Cafe Europe: 7pm, Thursday 11 May 2023, Holmfirth Civic Hall
Come and hear some curious tales of Europe from Arctic Scandinavia to the laid-back Aegean told by Stan Abbott, author, journalist and regular feature writer for The New European. Stan will take us on a tour of Europe, with a mixture of curious facts and intriguing tales and concluding with some thoughts and discussion on “just how European are we”, given that the concept of Europeanism is such a diverse one.
Stan Abbott is an author and journalist who has also worked extensively in destination marketing in various European countries, including Norway, the Faroe islands, France, Ireland, Estonia, Romania and Germany. As Head of Marketing at a UK-based partner of Air France, he experienced the French way of working, while, more recently, he has witnessed the progressive transformation of the North Atlantic archipelago of the Faroe islands on what seems like its inevitable progress towards full independence form “mother Denmark”. As a regular feature writer for The New European newspaper, he has written on a variety of mostly esoteric topics, including Europe’s islands and isthmuses. He is the author of a number of both non-fiction and fiction books, most recently on the stone circles of Cumbria and Britain’s ancient European links. He is fluent in French, can muddle through in German and is currently learning modern Greek.
